Grooming your cat may not be easy. Depending on your cat, he may or may not like baths, while some may just simply tolerate it. Your cat will groom himself, but he still needs a bath from time to time to help remove dander from the coat and skin. To help you groom your cat, read on for three tips that can help you through the process.
1. Bathing Your Cat
Don't think you can run some tepid water and your cat is going to stroll into the tub without any issues. This process may be one that requires a helper, or at the very least a harness to help hold your cat. Whatever process you use, be sure the water isn't too hot or too cold. Place your cat into the water and get him wet all over, being very careful around the head and ears. Gently rub soap made for felines into the fur and skin, then rinse thoroughly. You don't need to bathe your cat too often, or you will dry out his skin. Once finished with the bath, towel dry your cat gently and remove as much of the water as possible from his fur.
2. Brushing Your Cat
Brush your cat often to remove shedding fur and to remove any matting if you have a long-haired cat. Use brushes made for felines, or use a de-shedding tool to help remove more of your cat's shedding fur. A scratch pad with a brush attached can help you with grooming as well, as your cat will rub along the brush and use it as a toy as well. Clean this brush often to remove shedding fur.
3. Trimming Your Cat's Nails
If your cat hasn't been de-clawed, those sharp nails need to be trimmed. You can trim them yourself with a nail trimmer made for felines. Use a helper to hold your cat while you trim your cat's nails. This is something that may not go over very well with your cat. If your cat is biting and scratching, leave this work to a professional groomer, or to the veterinarian's office instead. They have the tools and know-how to get the job done.
Your cat may groom himself, but he needs help from time to time to ensure his skin and fur are healthy. Seek out pet grooming services or take your cat to the veterinarian to be groomed professionally, especially if Fluffy isn't too thrilled about the idea of you grooming him.
